Overview

The Proximity window displays BLE IBeacon data. An iBeacon is a small device that sends out a location ID and that triggers an action on a mobile device. iBeacons use a protocol that runs on a hardware standard called BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy), a subset of Bluetooth. Bluetooth proximity beacons using the iBeacon protocol are referred to here as BLEs.

Built-in BLE (Bluetooth Low-Energy) provides proximity, indoor location tracking, and other location-based mobile engagement services. Bluetooth beacons use Bluetooth low energy proximity sensing to transmit a UUID (universally unique identifier) monitored by a compatible app or operating system. The identifier and several bytes sent with it can be used to determine the device's physical location, track customers, and trigger location-based actions on the device, such as a push notification or a social media check-in.

You can enable iBeacon service on all the APs to which the network policy applies. Set a name and description for the service and a UUID (universally unique identifier) for the APs.

You can configure the embedded iBeacon transmitters in some AP models. As transmitters, these APs broadcast numerical advertisements that trigger actions on Bluetooth-enabled devices that come within range. An app running on a mobile device can react to an iBeacon signal by displaying welcome messages, sale announcements, or coupons. An AP functioning as an iBeacon transmitter in the middle of a retail store in a mall might trigger a welcome message to clients near the store entrance (proximity = far) and a sale announcement to customers browsing merchandise inside (proximity = near). Participation is inherently opt-in because users must install an app on their mobile device and enable Bluetooth. Stores are required to display signs disclosing their use of Bluetooth.

Proximity Views

The Proximity window presents the following view options, which can be selected using the drop-down list above the table:

Active & Detected View: The table in this view shows all owned and detected (potential rogue) BLEs, MAC addresses, universally unique identifiers (UUID), major and minor alarms, BLE RSSI signal strength, admin-defined static states, admin-defined rogue states, closest AP RSSI, the last time Extreme Networks APs detected the BLE, and admin-defined descriptions. The columns in this table are sortable.

My Devices View: This table in this view shows all owned BLEs, MAC addresses, universally unique identifiers (UUID), major and minor alarms, BLE RSSI signal strengths, admin-defined static states, the last time Extreme Networks APs detected the BLE, and admin-defined descriptions. The columns in this table are sortable. In this view you can import a list of owned and rogue BLEs.

You can select the number of devices you want to display per window for both tables and scroll through windows using the window page numbers.

Select to refresh the data.

Import or Download BLE Data

In the My Devices view, you can import a list of owned and rogue BLEs in the form of a comma-separated variables (.csv) file using the following format:

  • If possible, avoid using spread sheet applications such as Excel to create or modify a .csv file. Excel formats serial numbers incorrectly when they contain preceding zeros. Many applications interpret the serial number as a numeric value, which can cause the preceding zeros to be lost and the value to be represented in scientific notation, requiring you to use special functions or convert the cell content type. Instead, use a text editor that does not format the contents.

Select Import. In the Import dialog box, drag a .csv file to the first field, or select Choose to browse for a .csv file. To see a sample of the .csv file format, select Download an example CSV import file. Select Submit.

In both the Active & Detected and the My Devices views, select to download the displayed data in .csv format for reports or historical records.
